 Our Team

What We Do

The responsibilities of the Web Development team include:

  • Oversight of the UCR.edu website.
  • In concert with the Strategic Communications Marketing team, ensuring that campus websites utilize and abide by the integrated marketing plan.
  • Reviewing analytical data to ensure websites are servicing our visitors.
  • Working with on-campus clients on the development of select sites within the UCR.edu domain.
  • In concert with Computing and Communications (C&C), developing and utilizing the OmniUpdate content management system.

The sites we build help visitors find the information they are looking for as quickly as possible, while relaying the important messages of the university and its component parts. To make this a reality, we follow these concepts:

  • The Web is a living, dynamic publication.
  • The Web is a marketing tool that allows us to tell our story.
  • Our audience is coming to our site looking for specific content and information.

Other services provided by the Web Development team include

  • Management of the official UCR Facebook page.
  • Online advertising (e.g. Google Search Engine ads).
  • Web traffic analytics and assessment.

Some Frequently Asked Questions

What is Branding?

Branding is all about identification. It means that when someone visits a UCR website, there is absolutely no question that they are in our virtual world. The navigation is simple and straightforward, helping visitors find what they are seeking. Components of the branding include:

  • A logo, palette of colors and a set of fonts
  • Heavy user interaction, giving the user control over the experience
  • Creating a positive, immersive experience for the reader. That experience becomes part of the brand.

What is Design?

When we design a site, we are not just looking at pretty pictures or slick graphics. We look at the whole site, how the page fits into it, what the words say, what the art stands for and how they tie into the purpose of the site.

Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.

What is Content?

What you are reading right now. The words, the photos; everything on this screen is content. It is telling you our story and hopefully helping you get the information you are seeking. (In this case, the answer to the question “what is content?”)

Your content will make or break your site. People are probably not just accidentally happening upon your website. They have sought it out for some reason, looking for some information, or have been brought to it through a search process. Regardless, they know what they are looking for and if you don’t provide it quickly and simply, they are going to look elsewhere.

Where is the Creativity?

We know what some of you are thinking. You are thinking that you don’t want your website to look like everyone else’s. You don’t like the colors, or the navigation, or something else. You don’t want to be a “cookie-cutter site”. You want to put your style and personality into the site, to make it unique and exciting.

We encourage that. We encourage creativity. We just ask that you do it within the University’s brand. We have several color palettes to choose from and you can direct the look of your site by selecting great art.

Creating something from scratch is easy… the challenge is to create something remarkable within the framework and constrictions of the brand.
